- A United States 2008 National Crime Victimization Survey declared a 42 percent increase in reported domestic violence incidences; a 35 percent increase in reported incidences of rape and sexual assault.2
- 85% of domestic violence victims are women.3
- Since 2006-07 domestic violence clients have doubled in Alleghany County.4
- Federal and State budget cuts are devastating domestic violence programs all across the nation, severely limiting DANA's ability to help local victims.
- Household pressures during economic downturns.
- Increase in unemployment rate (Alleghany County 15.3% January 20105).
- Geographic difficulties associated with rural living, which may include limited access to financial, employment, and social/entertainment resources.
DANA wants to provide temporary shelter for families seeking refuge from their abusers. After finding shelter, survivors need not only emotional support but also resources to help facilitate job opportunities. DANA provides employment assistance, daycare options, legal referrals, counseling, transportation and educational seminars.
- Assisted - 498 people (increase 2007-08)
- Crisis calls - 798 people (increase 2007-08).
- Prevention education served 4,507 people last year.
Growing Voices wants to support DANA through purchasing requested tangible items, such as gas and grocery cards and contributing to a permanent DANA facility. In addition, we hope to encourage local and regional volunteers and connect DANA to other existing GV projects. This connection will encourage an exchange in abuse prevention ideas as well as foster universal support.
The Alleghany Partnership for Children (Parent Agency of DANA) was established in 1996. The APFC Board of Directors worked within the school system and became aware of the growing number of children having to deal with domestic violence in the home. Many students were showing a drop in grades and having difficulty concentrating on class material. Concerned with the health and educational success of its students, the Board decided to start a DV prevention program. DANA was created in November, 1999 by the concerned board members of the Alleghany Partnership for Children.
